Bliss
God, I just love not working. The days slide by with a kind of liquid feel, each one just a pleasant series of feedings and changings and saying, "Oh! That's my favorite face so far!"
It's nearly unbearably wonderful.
______________________________________
On my third day in the hospital, Dr. Dismissive happened to be the guy doing rounds. We saw him coming, and prepared ourselves. But he still managed to shock me.
He asked how I was doing, and before I even finished my answer he said, "So, have you thought about getting your tubes tied?"
Now, obviously, pregnancy and I don't get along. My pregnancy abilities are so horrible that they've managed to kill two out of three babies AND tried to kill me both times (you never want a doctor to have to say to your husband "We've managed to get ahead of the bleeding.").
But is that the best possible way he could have started that conversation? Perhaps something more like, "So, what are your future plans? Do you want more children?" or "Have you considered having other children?"
Or maybe he could have looked at our chart for ten seconds and seen that we required IVF with ICSI to get pregnant, and our chances of a "natural" pregnancy are less than nil, and not brought it up at all.
He could have also decided to keep his fucking mouth shut since he's not our primary doctor, and, in fact, we specifically requested that he be removed from our prenatal rotation. Which I know he knows.
But Charlie and I were both feeling so blessed and happy that we just laughed and laughed at his question. He looked perplexed, and then I assured him that we don't plan to have more children. He asked about birth control, and we laughed more. We'll either use condoms (ha!) or just utilize all the great info I've learned about monitoring my cycle to prevent any future pregnancies.
But seriously. Why such an asshole? Why suggest a surgical fucking procedure as a birth control method right out of the gate? And, why be sexist about it? Why not suggest a vasectomy for Charlie?
I am so glad I never have to go to that office again.

And now... pictures!

Awww, she's blogging already!!
Um, why not a vasectomy for Charlie? Well, technically it's YOU he doesn't think should get pregnant...but the real answer to all your questions is simply because he IS an asshole. Oh, I mean Dr, Asshole...lol.
Love the pics! Glad things are going well. Kiss that baby on the forehead for me. ;-)

I adore the pictures! Tori is so very beautiful and such expressions!
I'm sorry you had to even interact with Dr. A-hole or whatever his name is. He sounds like a real barrel of fun. NOT

Doctor Dismissive = Asshole
Tori = Cutest.Baby.Ever.

I love the one of you and Tori together. Babies are so beautiful when they sleep. What a jerk of a doctor! As my favorite internet friends would say, he needs to be smacked with a clue stick. Thank goodness you are done with him.

Wow. Total asshole. Can't even believe I just read what I read. Wow.
Tori is such a gorgeous little girl! I'm loving the picture updates - you spoil us! :)

Ohmigod, that kid is cute.
Birth control? Mirena IUD. No one gets cut, no one bleeds. It rawks.

Aww- I especially like the one of Tori cuddled up to you, that was always my Amelia's favorite place as an infant. Look at all that hair, too! LOL, I think Dr. Dismissive is like Dr. Mama's evil twin. It's like Dr. Drake and Stryker Ramorey.
Posted by: Elizabeth | Tuesday, June 20, 2006 at 07:08 PM
she's so itty bittily adorable, i can hardly stand it.
hey the day after i gave birth, an ob resident came into my room, looked at my belly and asked if i had another baby in there!!! 7.5 months later i'm still formulating insulting replies like telling he she looks like she's got five in her belly. or something.

OK- I love the pic of Tori and charlie sleeping together. Both with their arm thrown above their heads...like a mirror image.

But man, is your baby cute.
Enjoy this time.
Posted by: tracey | Tuesday, June 20, 2006 at 07:37 PM
Sorry about the jackass. I think something similar happened to Julie when Charlie was still in NICU. He said, "So, would it be a good idea for mom to have another pregnancy?" to a bunch of residents. And, well, maybe someone with a history of difficult pregnancies WOULD want to have a serious chat with her RE before attempting again. But to say it so soon after labor & delivery, to say it in such an offhand, dismissive way, without allowing the mom any chance to participate in the discussion . . . I mean, where are his manners?
Posted by: victoria | Tuesday, June 20, 2006 at 07:38 PM
What a beauty! I just have to say that csection baby heads are so edibly perfect spheres, aren't they?? LOL Mmmmm! I remember my son's rounded csection head and it seemed so angelic! Not that vaginal-birthed heads are alien-like LOL but they do have a different journey OUT!! heh... Tori is such a doll and it sounds like you are enjoying your days at home to the fullest!! *grin*
Posted by: Andrea in IN | Tuesday, June 20, 2006 at 07:52 PM
Dr Dismissive clearly is an ass, but I wonder whether other people have had this experience as well. I was asked several times when my last baby was born, and so far as I know, there are no reasons I shouldn't be pregnant again. I gathered it was not uncommon for older (over 35?) mothers to want it done, so they ask. It still felt weird. However, they asked me before doing my c-section. Bizarre that he asked you after.
Tori is BEAUTIFUL, as are you!
Posted by: tav | Tuesday, June 20, 2006 at 07:54 PM
Dr. Dismissive =asshole! I would've asked him...ever thought about getting a real personality? Then I would've laughed and laughed and laughed. Hehe. But then again, that is the way I am. OMG Tori gets more adorable by the second!

Posted by: Abby | Tuesday, June 20, 2006 at 08:24 PM
I am so glad you're having a good time and enjoying mommydom!
As for doctor asshole, have you considered contacting the practice and discussing this? Seriously - at least he could look at you bloody chart and see what your story is!! I am so offended for you & Charlie and this guy and his bosses really need to know what an ass he is and how he shouldn't be treating women on a good day, much less women with a high risk pregnancy who jumped through flaming hoops to get pregnant.
Posted by: Jenni | Tuesday, June 20, 2006 at 08:28 PM
Beautiful baby! Asshole doctor! I had to have an abdominal CT a few weeks ago and the questionnaire had the "are you using contraception?" and "do you think you could be pregnant" sequence of questions. I wrote "no" and "extremely unlikely" and of course the tech had to come out and ask me what I meant. Right, sure, I've never ever managed to get pregnant but I'm sure THIS time it actually worked... Sheesh.
Posted by: unexplained | Tuesday, June 20, 2006 at 08:38 PM

i hit the "comments" link because i felt the irresistible need to say that dr. dismissive is an asshole, but, clearly, plenty of people have beaten me to it.
allow me to say, instead, that tori is a beauty and that i am about as happy as i can be for people i've never met. congratulations and best best wishes.

some doctors are GREAT, some are a**holes.
Soory you had to deal with the latter.
Can you write a letter to the hospital or office he works for, so at least something's on his record?
Tori is VERY smooshable, by the by!

Tori, you are indeed one pretty little lass.

I had an asshole doctor like that too, who even said, "If you don't get a tubal, I'll do one anyways (c/section) and you'll never know, ha ha."
yeah, ha ha.:rolls eyes:

The photo of Charlie and Tori together made me laugh -- talk about genetics in action! The one of you and Tori made me cry ... just so freakin' beautiful. How wonderful this all is.
Dr. Asshole has got to go, though. I add my voice to the chorus that wants you to write a letter to the practice explaining that he needs some serious work on his bedside manner. Think of your letter as a service to other pregnant women who might be verbally assaulted by this idiot. (So glad you had the presence of mind to just laugh at him!! I'm sure that was the worst reply this pompous ass could have received -- just being laughed at.)
Posted by: Annie | Tuesday, June 20, 2006 at 10:14 PM
That is one lucky baby.
Posted by: DoctorMama | Tuesday, June 20, 2006 at 10:15 PM
What a beauty! Her mouth is just like a rose.
Dr. Dismissive is an absolute ass. I second (third? millionth?) writing a letter to the practice about his egregious insensitivity and general assiness. And it is unbelievably sexist to assume a woman should get her tubes tied when a vasectomy carries a lower risk and lower recovery time.

Tori is the cutest baby ever. And I think I can answer your question about Dr. Asshole: he didn't suggest a vasectomy because he would never advocate altering another man. Totally reworking a woman's insides? No problem, ma'am.

those pics of tori are so beautiful, and the one with charlie is a classic, with both arms up like that! hehhehe..you know she's her father's daughter in that pic!

"So, have you thought about getting some brain cells?" What a tactless jerk.
I'm LOVING the photos of Tori. I especially love the one of her and Charlie sleeping - each with an arm over the head. So sweet!!!
Happy Parenthood!

He just couldn't let you get away without another zinger could he. I'm sorry that happned, but glad you and Charlie were in such baby heaven that it rolled off.
As for the baby, she's everything everyone says and more. Enjoy these days, they are so, so special.
Posted by: Bluestocking | Wednesday, June 21, 2006 at 02:20 AM
She is so danged cute! Staying home with a newborn is the best thing ever. We had an asshole doc on our rotation also. He checked my bp during a mandatory visit to "meet some of the other residents" in case my dr. was on vacation, and panicked because it was slightly high, made me lie on my side for 30 min. while he called my regular doc, to find out that it was NORMAL for me to be slightly high (like I told him in the first place)and just generally made me feel like shit for being a big girl who was pregnant. He was the same guy who told my SIL that she should abort her son because he had a chance of having Down's Syndrome after the MSAFP test was slightly abnormal...thanks be to God that she didn't, because he was completely fine...no Down's. Crazy.

And, hey! Is that a Bugaboo I see there in the background??
LOL - I know how happy you are with the Bugaboo, which makes me swell with pride as they are a Dutch invention, and I had no idea they were so popular in the States!
Good for you guys for not responding to the idiot doctor! Laughing seems like an escellent response in the face of so much stupidity.

Love the photo of Tori and Charlie! So cute! She is absolutely beautiful. I'm always great with the comebacks after the fact. I add my voice to the chorus calling for a letter to his practice. Copy everyone in the practice, too. Hell, send it to the editor of your paper. ;) Let other mommies and daddies know about him.

She has the cutest nose! I forgot how tiny they start out.
Posted by: Reese | Wednesday, June 21, 2006 at 08:53 AM
She's beautiful!!!
The man has some nerve on many different levels. To purposely interact with you after being told not to is serious in and of itself but to then tacklessly approach you regarding birth control so soon after Tori was born is just downright rude.
But enough about him, Tori looks so alert! And she does look like Charlie!

Childbirth has changed you CeCe or maybe the things coming out of Dr. D's mouth was just that ridiculous you guys had to laugh. I think I would have asked him if he read my chart or better yet if he ever thought of going into another profession that requires him to be an insensitive prick. Yeah I need to go take a B-12 vitamin I am not in a good mood today. I love the mirror pic of Tori and Charlie, beautiful.

You are one LUCKY momma!! She is so cute and growing!! I can't wait to have all of this!! I am 24 weeks now-- count down!!! It still seems so far away. And now that I feel him move, I feel so much better about the whole thing. BTW: Where did you get your dopplar from? I know that you had one, from your pre post. I know that you can rent one online- BUT that's a lot of $$$. Being that my job just let me go because I was "Pregant" and couldn't work a full day!! Which sucks.......
But anyway, we will do what we have to to keep this baby and what ever coners we must cut.
Please keep us in mind...
Love the baby Tori! She is breathtaking...

What an idiot! You should complain to the licensing board, obviously the man is illiterate, otherwise he'd be able to read a fucking chart! Gah!
But who cares about all that when you have the CUTEST BABY EVER! Sigh, baby bliss, thanks for reminding me how awesome that is. But the one handed blogging, that gave me the biggest grin!

See, I'm convinced that a certain percent of the population is just FUCKED when it comes to social graces.
When I was in the ER with an infected gallbaldder, writhing in the worst pain I'd ever imagined, having been stuck with useless morphine several times, I told the nurse I wanted a REAL painkiller and oh, how about some IV fluids because my lips were puckering from dehydration. He went to tell the attending, who replied loud enough for me to hear, "I want I want I want I want."

right, so I know you've already got more comments then you will probably read, but I just had to speak up at the tubes tied comment.
When I had my first visit for this pregnancy (my second) that was the first thing my dr asked me. Umm excuse me? I'm only 25, and what if I want to just keep popping them out? (umm which we don't) but why did she just assume that? and why not ask it in a differant way? Or what about the hubs? (he's going to get the snip anyway).
Just thought I would share!
Posted by: Ceece | Wednesday, June 21, 2006 at 09:54 AM
yeesh! What an ass. It is really sexist to suggest a tubal ligation over a vasectomy (inpatient vs. outpaitent). He is clear Dr Dumbass.
Posted by: Sarah | Wednesday, June 21, 2006 at 10:09 AM
She gets prettier every day, Cecily. And the picture with Charlie. To die for. Regarding the asshole who should obviously not be a doctor - I seriously think you should write someone a letter about his behavior. That is NOT okay what he said and since he consistently does this, it should be brought to someone's attention. Thank heavens that you are enjoying the new pace with Tori and that your happiness overrides his assholeness, but I just can't imagine him doing that to someone else. Man, what a fucker!
Posted by: Jen | Wednesday, June 21, 2006 at 10:10 AM
I saw Ceece's comment and it reminded me of my own experience - kind of the exact opposite, though. I went for my six week follow up after my son was born, and asked the doc about having my tubes tied. He was totally dismissive - "Oh, you'll want another baby soon, you're way too young to even think about that." For the next ten years I would bring it up w/ my docs only to have them tell me I was too young or would change my mind.
When my son was 17, I finally got it done. (And then 2 1/2 years later I had a reversal -- well, who knew I'd fall for a much younger man who wanted to have kids w/ me??)

We've already talked about Dr. Dismissive in person so I won't comment further on what an asshole he is.
But Cec, the IVF + ICSI precedent is not 100% foolproof birth control. Trust me, I know of what I speak...Neither is IVF+ICSI+assisted hatching+diminished ovarian reserve...

Beautiful, beautiful girl!
Doctors, esp OBs, frustrate the hell out of me with their attitude, which is why I'm planning a home birth if I keep having a healthy pregnancy. It just makes it that much more outstanding when you have a good one.
Re: (I think) Jen, whose doc make a "joke" about doing one anyway, my mom thinks that may have happened to her during her (first) C-sec for baby #6. They asked her on the table, she and my dad gave an emphatic NO (obviously, they very much wanted a big family - and this was 1985 when it was REALLY unpopular). She was 36 and never got pregnant again. She's always suspected he did it anyway, which would be HUGE malpractice, but she'd have to get opened up to prove it.

Ive been out of the country for a month or so and just got back in Monday. I clicked on your page with butterflies in my stomach because I knew little one was due during my time away. I was praying that all would be fine and that Nothing Bad Would Happen. I am so happy for you and Charlie, she is indeed perfect and beautiful. Congratulations and much love.

I love the picture of you with Tori (can she GET any cuter??) and also the one with Charlie. I love father-daughter pics. She is so lucky to have a wonderful father. I had a great one too and have wonderful memories of him.
